Makarska

The town of Makarska is situated in the heart of the Makarska Riviera, which stretches 60 km long and only two to three kilometers wide area between the mountain Biokovo and the Adriatic Sea.Sunny Mediterranean climate and several kilometers long natural pebble beach with clear blue sea are the reason why this area is extremely popular tourist destination. In the natural bay between the peninsula of St. Peter and Osejava is located Makarska which is with nearly 14 000 residents also the the largest center of Riviera. Although the winters are very mild and humid and the average winter temperature is around 10 °C, this area is primarily oriented to the arid summer tourist season when average daily temperatures are around 25 °C.

The favorable climate allows long bathing season which lasts from May to October, however majority of tourists come in July and August when the town abounds with entertainment and cultural events such as Makarska Cultural Summer, Fisherman's nights, the Summer Carnival and the Night of Kalalarga. Also during the summer Makarska has a very vivid nightlife where thousands of young people in various discotheques entertain till the early morning hours. Besides the natural beauties Makarska offers its guests the cultural landmarks such as the Municipal Museum and Gallery of Antun Gojak, the statue of Father Andrija Kačić Miošić at the eponymous main square, Napoleon's monument erected in honor of Auguste de Marmont, then the numerous religious facilities, among which stands out famous Marian shrine Vepric, followed by the baroque cathedral of St.Mark, the Franciscan Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary, under which operates the famous Malacological museum with a collection of seashells from around the world and church of St. Peter from the 13th century at the eponymous peninsula.Makarska has also an important transit location so it is by ferry connected with the island of Brač, and from the nearby Drvenik with the island of Hvar. Behind the back of Makarska is situated a nature park Biokovo, the world famous Marian shrine of Međugorje is located some 60 km away, while the UNESCO protected cities of Split and Dubrovnik, are located 60 and 140 km away, respectively.
